I’m Anthony Conner, and I’ve spent the best part of forty years working with my hands, my head and a very strong sense of pride. I’m a builder and carpenter by trade, operating across South East Essex, and I’ve seen just about every trend, shortcut and miracle product come and go. What has never changed for me is the importance of doing the job properly, treating people fairly, and leaving a finish that I’m genuinely happy to put my name to.
I started out at a time when you learned by watching, listening and repeating until you got it right. There were no shortcuts and no second chances. If something wasn’t square, plumb or solid, it was pulled apart and done again. That mindset has stayed with me ever since. Whether I’m hanging a door, fitting a kitchen, redecorating a room or installing a full en-suite bathroom, I approach every job with the same care and attention. Size doesn’t matter to me; standards do.
Over the decades I’ve worked on period properties, modern homes, extensions, small repairs and full refurbishments. Carpentry has always been my foundation, but my experience naturally grew into all aspects of domestic building work. Decorating, flooring, stud walls, bespoke storage, bathroom installations, tiling and general improvements have all become part of my day-to-day work. Homeowners appreciate dealing with one experienced tradesman who understands how everything fits together, rather than juggling multiple contractors who only see their own piece of the puzzle.
Working in South East Essex has given me a real appreciation for the variety of homes in the area. From older houses that need sympathetic work and careful repairs, to newer builds that often require refinement and better finishes, no two jobs are ever the same. I enjoy that challenge. Every property has its quirks, and part of my role is finding practical, lasting solutions that suit both the building and the people living in it.
One thing clients often mention is that I’m a bit of a perfectionist. I don’t take that as an insult; I take it as a compliment. I notice the small things. I care about straight lines, tight joints, neat edges and finishes that still look good years down the line. I’d rather take a little longer and get it right than rush and leave something that niggles at me. If I wouldn’t be happy with it in my own home, it doesn’t leave yours in that condition.
Pricing is another area where experience matters. After forty years, I know how long work should realistically take and what materials truly cost. I price my work reasonably and honestly, without inflated figures or vague estimates. I’m not the cheapest, and I don’t try to be, but I believe strongly in fair value. Clients pay for skill, reliability and peace of mind, and in return they get workmanship that lasts.
Installing en-suite bathrooms has become one of the areas I’m particularly known for. It’s a job that demands precision, planning and a clear understanding of plumbing, carpentry, tiling and finishes. Done badly, bathrooms cause endless problems. Done properly, they add real comfort and value to a home. I take the time to ensure everything is prepared correctly behind the scenes, not just what you can see on the surface.
Communication matters just as much as tools and materials. I make a point of explaining what I’m doing, why I’m doing it, and what to expect next. Building work can be disruptive, and I respect that I’m working in someone’s home, not on a building site. Keeping things tidy, turning up when I say I will, and treating people’s space with respect is simply part of the job.
After four decades in the trade, I’m still proud of what I do. I enjoy seeing a space come together, knowing it’s been built properly from the ground up. I enjoy the trust people place in me, and I take that responsibility seriously. My reputation has been built one job at a time, and that’s exactly how I intend to keep it.
If you’re looking for an experienced builder and carpenter in South East Essex who cares about quality, offers fair pricing, and takes genuine pride in his work, then you’re looking for someone who still believes that good craftsmanship matters.
Kind regards,
Anthony
